There are eight Wesleyan Hispanic churches in Florida. Most of them are developing churches, but a few are multi-staff congregations. Hispanic church multiplication in the Florida District began with Revs. Edwin and Gloria Cortes, co-pastors from Puerto Rico. In 1994, they went to Clearwater to plant the first Hispanic Wesleyan church. The mother church is Iglesia El Sembrador Wesleyano (The Wesleyan Sower) and it now has daughter and granddaughter churches in the area.

Edwin and Gloria attempted to plant the first daughter church in St. Petersburg in 1999, but after pouring all their love and efforts into the challenge, it did not survive. But they also learned much about the realities of church planting.
They recovered, and in 2002 planted a new church with joy in Spring Hill called Iglesia Renacer (The Born-Again Church). The daughter of Iglesia El Sembrador Wesleyano, it met for six years at Spring Hill Wesleyan Church (currently, Fellowship Community Church), thanks to the kindness of that congregation. Then in 2008, God provided a temple of their own in the Shady Hills area of Spring Hill.
God was not done calling Edwin and Gloria to new beginnings. In 2010, as they were driving through an unfamiliar area, their hearts were filled with joy in a mysterious way. They recognized the Lord’s call. It took two years of planning, but God helped them plant Iglesia La Casa de Dios (The House of God) in Land O’Lakes in 2012.

Eventually, God called the Cortes’ back to Iglesia Renacer in Spring Hill, where they continue today. But they are still multiplying disciples, leaders, and churches in another way. For years they have been teaching in the Hispanic Ministerial Academy under Georgetown Wesleyan University of the Americas, led by Dr. Shelton Wood. In that training program, Edwin and Gloria have helped prepare dozens of other Spanish-speaking pastors, many of whom have been ordained.
The parents of Hispanic ministries in the Florida District, Edwin and Gloria are grateful to former and current district superintendents: the late Rev. Sarah Pérez-González, Dr. Jerry Rott, and Rev. Patrick Styers for their support. They all have sought the power of the Holy Spirit in seeing so many lives transformed in Christ!

Edwin y Gloria trataron de plantar la primeria iglesia hija en St. Petersburg en 1999, pero después de dar todo su amor y esfuerzos al reto, ésta no sobrevivió. Su ministerio cambió algunas vidas, y ellos aprendieron mucho acerca de las realidades de plantar Iglesias.

Ellos reconocieron el llamado del Señor. Les tomó dos años de planeación, pero Dios les ayudó a plantar la Iglesia La Casa de Dios en Land O’Lakes en el 2012.

Eventualmente, Dios llamó a los pastores Cortés de regreso a su iglesia anterior Iglesia Renacer en Spring Hill, donde continúan hasta el día de hoy. Pero ellos siguen multiplicando discípulos, líderes e iglesias de otra forma. Por varios años han estado enseñando en la Academia Ministerial Hispana bajo la Universidad Wesleyana Georgetown de las Américas, dirigida por el Dr. Shelton Wood. En ese programa de entrenamiento, Edwin y Gloria han ayudado a preparar docenas de pastores hispano-hablantes, muchos de los cuales han recibido su ordenación.
